The game entered the Classic phase of development. This included the Survival Test, Multiplayer Test as well as more content such as mobs, more blocks and more Physics.

Compared to Lego Creator, Minecraft relied exclusively on a hard-wired fixed grid, meaning blocks and similar items could only be placed on the exact integer coordinates the grid itself was set. This method was commonly used in games such as SimCity, Roller Coaster Tycoon, and Sim Theme Park, among others. Minecraft had inherited this system from previous games, resulting in the block grid system that we know of today. Another advantage of the grid's hard-wired structure was that only one block or tile could be put in that spot at a time, since the data of that co-ordinate was then absorbed by the tile or block itself, not the empty data which is air that was previously in the same location. Since that co-ordinate's data was taken up by the tile itself, for example, you cannot place more than one torch in the same spot as the first one. This, along with other factors, creates a number of major problems which we will get to later in the next section.
